The only way to fight back is to promote literacy. Quote me on that one. This is and always has been a hill I will die on as an author. Romance author nonetheless.
In fact, one of my best releases ended up banned by Amazon in it’s first few days, tanking my ratings when it was poised to hit the Amazon bestsellers list. Fuckers. I’ve always had it out for that Bezos motherfucker.
With fascism upon us here in America I think it is more important than ever to highlight, promote, and encourage the reading of banned books. So, as I work on my new novel which took up the bulk of my morning today… I’ve also decided to highlight several banned books once a month. Using my platform as a bullhorn to fight back.
The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank
I think this one is very self explanatory, especially today on the 80th Anniversary of the Liberation of Auschwitz. The fact that something that was required reading for me as a child is banned in schools in America is obscene.
Especially after witnessing the Annex she lived in first hand when Addison & I went to Amsterdam. The experience genuinely will be with me for life. The silence was deafening, and the only sounds that could be heard were the words from the televisions giving clips of historical context for each room we weaved through. (Read Important Reminders of History here)
More than 6 million Jews were murdered. And we watch history coming to repeat itself again. Do your children a favor and spend the time sharing this novel with them as well since we know schools aren’t fighting back to keep them in even just the library.
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
Another classic that was required reading for us when we were in grade school. The fact that we are even discussing it being banned is fucking absurd.
The 1961 Pulitzer Prize winning novel addresses America’s racism no matter how much people want to hide that today.
A classic that has forever stayed with me since I was forced to read it in middle school. A stunningly true depiction of the future where government overreach, surveillance, and propaganda rules and citizens are told not to believe what they are seeing before them.
Sounds eerily familiar right? If this is one you have never read, or need a refresher on… now is the time you are going to want to dive in. Very with the times currently.
The Handmaid’s Tale - Margaret Atwood
While this one may seen pretty cliche, it couldn’t be more spot on with the times. We all joked during the last Trump Administration that we should start preparing… none of us ever thought it would become our reality though.
Fuck my life.
I am not cut out to be a Martha.
Where the fuck do I end up?
I hope that these first couple books help to jump start your reading for the year. If you weren’t thinking about brushing off your e-reader for the year… now is the time.

Not cut out to be a Martha either. One way ticket to the colonies for me.
But seriously, as a public educator, I can’t agree more with this post, and, of course, this list is spot on.
Keep doing what you do! We need you more than ever! ♥️✌🏻
Have ordered a few of these already along with The Constitution and Animal Farm. Going to get Handmaid's now. Ty
